Privacy Policy

Overview

Thank you for using Leafed — a free book discovery and tracking app designed for readers who want to explore new titles in a simple, privacy-friendly way.

Your privacy is important to us. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect (if any), how we use it, and what your rights are.

Leafed Mobile App is built to be privacy-first:

• We do not require an account — An account is optional, used only for syncing your library across devices.
• We do not collect personal data — Nothing is collected beyond what you choose to sync (see "Optional Account & Sync" below).
• We do not track your activity — Your searches and browsing stay private.
• We do not use analytics or ads — Nothing is sent by default. If you choose to turn on "Share Anonymous Usage Data" in Settings → Privacy, the app sends only which features get used (for example "a book was added"), never book titles, notes, or reading history, under a random hashed ID that is not linked to you. This opt-in analytics uses TelemetryDeck, a privacy-focused service that stores only anonymized, aggregated counts. Turn it off anytime.

All searches and browsing happen directly between your device and the Open Library API, which powers Leafed's book data.

Indie Book Database: If you submit a book through our submission form, we collect minimal data (book metadata and optionally a hashed email). See the "Indie Book Database Submissions" section below for details.

Optional Account & Sync

You can optionally create an account in the app's Settings to sync your library across devices. If you do, we collect and store:

• Your email address — used only to sign you in (a one-time code or link; no password) and to send those sign-in emails. Never for marketing.
• Your library data — books, shelves, notes and quotes, reading and listening sessions, and reading goals, so they can appear on your other devices.

This data is stored with our infrastructure provider Supabase, transmitted over HTTPS, and protected so only your account can access your data. We never sell it or share it with anyone.

Signing out keeps your library on your device and stops syncing. Deleting your account (Settings → Account → Delete Account) permanently removes your account and all synced data from our servers; your local library stays on your device.

Web access: if you have a sync account, you can also sign in at leafed.app/library.html to view and update your library from a browser. It's the same account and the same data, under the same rules — no ads, no analytics, and no tracking on that page. Your sign-in session is kept in your browser's local storage and is removed when you sign out.

Indie Book Database Submissions

Information collected when you submit a book to Leafed's indie catalog:

Book Metadata

• Title, Author, Year Published (required) — Basic book information
• ISBN (optional) — International Standard Book Number
• Description (optional) — Book synopsis or description
• Page Count (optional) — Number of pages
• Language (optional) — Book language code
• Subjects/Genres (optional) — Comma-separated list of genres or subjects
• Cover Image (optional) — Book cover image file (stored on our server)
• Book Links (optional) — URLs where readers can purchase or download the book (stored in a separate database table)

Contact Information

• Email Address (optional) — Your email is hashed using SHA-256 before storage. Only the hash is stored in the database as submitter_email_hash. The original email is never stored and cannot be recovered from the hash. Email is used only for notifications about your submission.

Technical Data

• IP Address — Temporarily logged for rate limiting and security purposes (preventing spam and abuse). IP addresses are not stored long-term and are used only for security monitoring.
• reCAPTCHA — The submission form uses Google reCAPTCHA to block automated spam. Google may collect device and interaction data to make that assessment; see Google's privacy policy. reCAPTCHA runs only on the submission form, not elsewhere on the site or in the app.

Purpose and Use

The data collected is used for:

• Manual curation and review of book submissions
• Displaying books in the public indie book database
• Preventing spam and abuse through rate limiting
• Sending notifications (if email provided) about submission status

Data Storage

Book data is stored in our database with the following structure:

• books table — Stores book metadata (title, author, year, ISBN, description, page count, language, subjects, cover filename, submitter email hash, timestamps)
• book_links table — Stores purchase/download links associated with each book
• Cover images — Stored as files on our server, referenced by filename in the database

Data Retention: Submitted book data is retained indefinitely unless you request deletion or the book is flagged for removal. You can request deletion by contacting us at mike@leafed.app.

Information We Don't Collect (Mobile App)

Unless you create an optional sync account (see "Optional Account & Sync" above), we do not collect, store, or process any of the following when you use the Leafed mobile app:

Note: This section applies to the Leafed mobile app. For information about data collected through the indie book submission form, see the section above.

• Your name, email, or contact details
• Your reading history or book preferences
• Your location, device ID, or IP address
• Any personally identifiable information (PII)

Without an account, your favorites, shelves, and reading history are stored locally on your device only. We never transmit that data to our servers.

Data from External Services

Leafed uses a few public, third-party APIs to power certain features:

We do not control or have access to data collected by these third-party sites when you leave the app (e.g., when you open an Amazon link).

Affiliate Disclosure

Leafed participates in the Amazon Associates Program. As an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases.

• When you tap "Buy on Amazon," we include an affiliate tag (leafedapp0e-20) in the link.
• We also participate in the Awin affiliate network for some other stores, such as Libro.fm. Those links carry an Awin tracking parameter so the store knows the visit came from Leafed.
• Affiliate links never affect your price, and they help support ongoing development.

Website Analytics (leafed.app)

This website — the pages at leafed.app, including the blog — uses Google Analytics, loaded through Google Tag Manager, to count page visits and see which pages help people find Leafed. This is standard, aggregate website measurement: page views, referrers, and rough geography. Google Analytics sets cookies in your browser to do this; content blockers stop it and the site works fine without it.

Two things worth being clear about:

• The website and the app are separate. Nothing the app does is connected to website analytics, and the app itself sends nothing unless you opt in (see above).
• The web library has no analytics. The page where you sign in and manage your books at leafed.app/library carries no Google Analytics, no Tag Manager, and no tracking of any kind.

Feedback Board

Our public feedback board lives at leafed.fider.io and is hosted by Fider, a third-party service. If you post or vote on an idea there, Fider stores what you share — your idea, comments, and the name/email you sign up with — under Fider's privacy policy. The board is entirely optional and separate from your Leafed library; nothing from the app is ever sent there.

Sharing & Share Cards

When you share a book, a quote, or a reading recap from the app, Leafed renders the image on your device and hands it to your phone's share sheet. Nothing is uploaded to our servers, and Leafed never posts anywhere on your behalf — you choose where the image goes, or simply save it to your Photos.

Local Storage

Leafed stores data locally on your device for:

• Your book library and shelves
• Reading sessions, notes, and quotes
• App settings (theme, filters, etc.)

This data never leaves your device (unless you opt into iCloud sync on iOS or an optional sync account) and is deleted automatically if you uninstall the app.

Children's Privacy

Leafed does not knowingly collect or store any personal data from children under 13. The app is suitable for general audiences, but parents should supervise internet use as Open Library links may lead to external content.

Security

Leafed transmits and stores as little personal data as possible — none at all unless you opt into a sync account. All requests to public APIs and to our sync infrastructure are made over secure HTTPS connections, and synced data is protected so only your account can access it.
